Bad Software: What To Do When Software Fails.

Cem Kaner practices law, usually representing individual developers, small development services companies, and customers. His focus is on the law of software quality. He is also actively involved in legislation affecting the law of software quality. He attends, as a participating observer, Drafting Committee meetings for Uniform Commercial Code Article 2B and for the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act. He has also served pro bono as a Deputy District Attorney, and as an investigator/mediator for a California county's Consumer Affairs Department. Link to Kaner's resume.

Kaner consults on technical and software development management issues and teaches about software testing at UC Berkeley Extension, UC Santa Cruz Extension, and at several software companies. He founded and hosts the Los Altos Workshops on Software Testing. His book, Testing Computer Software, received the Award of Excellence in the Society for Technical Communication's 1993 Northern California Technical Publications Competition. Kaner began working with computers in 1976, while a graduate student of  Human Experimental Psychology. He came to Silicon Valley in 1983 and has worked as a programmer, human factors analyst, user interface designer, software salesperson, associate in an organization development consulting firm, technical writer, software testing technology team leader, manager of software testing, manager of technical publications, software development manager, and director of documentation and software testing. 

Kaner holds a B.A. (Math, Philosophy), a J.D. (law degree), and a Ph.D. (Psychology) and is Certified in Quality Engineering by the American Society for Quality Control.

David Pels is a native Californian who grew up in Silicon Valley. He has worked in computer and software support and sales since 1981. His positions have included management of sales administration and customer operations (including product support) for a publisher of advanced automotive diagnostics; director of client support and services for a financial application publisher; group manager of product support for a large mass-market maker of computer peripherals and software applications; director of world wide client support and services for a maker of high end color copy, and printing systems; manager of product support for a mass-market productivity software publisher; supervisor of product support for a publisher of game and productivity/small business software; and retail sales of consumer electronics. Pels has attended several meetings of the Uniform Commercial Code Article 2B Drafting Committee. He is member of the Association of Support Professionals. He is also an active scout leader in the Boy Scouts of American and is a member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
